I was listening to music from the 70s on youtube and found the following comments: “Blessed are those of us who lived through those seventies, this is music. Today’s is just noise and destruction, nothing for the future”, “this is music that comes to the soul of us, not that of this youth that is just noise and sex”, “this is the type of music that our young people today should listen to”.
But I wonder, today’s teenagers, who are lucky enough to still be alive in the 2050s, won’t they say the same thing? When they are 50 years old or more, will they not remember the songs of today with equal nostalgia?
I think each of us considers the time when we were around 13 years old as our “wonder years”, as the title of that unforgettable television series says. We overlook all the inconveniences that we had at that age and only remember what was pleasant for us. Generally at that age the attraction to the opposite sex begins and almost always those days are linked to some song. That is why, after a few years or decades, listening to them again makes us so nostalgic. I was no exception, and sure enough, there was a cute twelve-year-old girl who looked like she was 14, which was my age at the time. And I remember each and every one of the songs that were on the radio and that, thanks to YouTube, I can listen to them at any time.
All this added to the fact that we did not have any really important worries, because our basic needs were well covered by our parents, and most of us were in good health (the machine was new), make this time really “wonderful”.
But getting back to music, we can imagine that in the 2050s, today’s youth will consider the music of those years to be anything but music. And likewise, the young people of those years, when they are 50 years old or older, that is, in the 90s, will think the same way, and so on ad infinitum. For my part, I prefer not to judge current music and continue enjoying my favorite music: that of the 70s, while acknowledging the quality of some performances from other decades.
It is worth mentioning that the more different rhythms we like, the more opportunities we will have to enjoy music. I have a friend who only likes rock and nothing else. So, he misses the pleasure of listening to classical music, jazz, ballads, boleros, salsa, music from the Sonora Matancera, traditional music from his country, etc. You have to keep in mind that, whatever the rhythm, there are always one, two or more songs that everyone likes and that are well known.
