Aristóteles Sócrates Onassis (1906-1975) fue el multimillonario griego más famoso del siglo XX y el hombre más rico del mundo en su época. Hizo su fortuna en la industria naviera, llegando a poseer cientos de barcos, algunos de los cuales transportaban petróleo desde Oriente Medio a los demás países del mundo. También era dueño del yate más lujoso del mundo: el “Cristina”.

Aparte de ser dueño de la mitad de los inmuebles del Principado de Mónaco (incluyendo su famoso casino), Onassis tenía propiedades por todo el mundo, un apartamento en el hotel Pierre en Nueva York, un penthouse en París, una casa en Londres, un alojamiento en Buenos Aires, una hacienda en Uruguay, una villa en Atenas, pero su preferida era la mansión que tenía en la isla Skorpios, también de su propiedad. Skorpios es una pequeña isla localizada en las aguas del mar Jónico, cerca de la costa occidental de Grecia. Onassis la había comprado para vivir allí, pero no sólo compró Skorpios, si no también otra isla cercana, Sparti, con el único propósito de asegurar su privacidad, evitando que curiosos y periodistas, ubicados en la isla Sparti, pudieran verlo y fotografiarlo, armados de potentes telescopios y cámaras fotográficas de gran alcance.

Pero lo que distinguía a Onassis de otros multimillonarios era que le gustaba rodearse de celebridades (ver el artículo “¡Estos Millonarios!” en este mismo blog). Por esta razón Onassis era conocido en todo el mundo y su popularidad creció como la espuma cuando se casó con Jackie Kennedy, la viuda del presidente de Estados Unidos, John F. Kennedy.

En Julio de 1970 Onassis estaba en su isla de Skorpios, cuando recibió una llamada telefónica urgente: el avión del vuelo 255, de la Olympic Airways, aerolínea de su propiedad, había sido secuestrado por 6 terroristas árabes, en su ruta de Beirut a Atenas. El Boeing 727, con 47 pasajeros a bordo y 6 tripulantes, había sido forzado a aterrizar en el aeropuerto de Atenas. Los secuestradores exigían la inmediata liberación de 7 terroristas árabes, prisioneros en una cárcel de Grecia. Inmediatamente Onassis voló a Atenas, y junto con el ministro del interior Stylianos Pattakos, comenzó a negociar con los secuestradores.

Onassis se ofreció como rehén, a cambio de los pasajeros y tripulantes, pero su oferta fue rechazada. Los piratas del aire contestaron: “¿Quién es Onassis?, nunca hemos oído de él”. Agregaron que él era sólo uno. Luego de 8 tensas horas de negociación con el gobierno griego, los secuestradores aceptaron el compromiso de que los terroristas serían liberados en el transcurso de ese mes.
