Cuando tenía 10 años vivía frente a la Universidad de San Marcos en Lima, Perú. Sólo tenía que salir de mi casa, cruzar un pequeño jardín y una pista y ya estaba en la universidad. No estaba rodeada por muros, ni entradas con vigilantes (como sí lo está ahora). Cualquiera podía pasearse por sus instalaciones, caminar por los salones de clase, subir a sus edificios. La Universidad cuenta con un estadio de fútbol con capacidad para unos 40,000 espectadores, pero en ese tiempo estaba muy abandonado y no se le daba uso.
Como es de suponer, la Universidad fue uno de mis escenarios favoritos para jugar, no sólo para mí, sino también para mis amigos del barrio. Incontables partidos de fulbito, trepar a los árboles, encender fogatas, subir y bajar las gradas del estadio a toda velocidad, construir improvisadas cabañas, subir a las azoteas de los edificios, pasear por los alrededores del estadio, robar deliciosas moras (blackberry) de unos árboles que estaban dentro de la Universidad, figuraban entre nuestras actividades preferidas.
Una noche, con mi amigo Mario, se nos ocurrió ir a la Facultad de Letras, cuyo edificio de cuatro pisos, era el que quedaba más cerca de nuestras casas (aproximadamente a 120 metros nada más). No recuerdo porqué, pero esa noche nos pusimos a correr. Llegamos corriendo al edificio, subimos corriendo sus rampas (el edificio no tenía escaleras sino amplias rampas, parecidas a las rampas de un estacionamiento de carros), y terminamos en la azotea. La Universidad tenía su guardián, para evitar que los niños entren, pero siempre brillaba por su ausencia.
Ya en la azotea, que es bastante grande, continuamos corriendo. Era de noche y no era fácil ver por donde ibas, pues allí no había iluminación. Para agravar la situación, la azotea no tenía ningún muro de protección en sus bordes; simplemente el piso terminaba y ya. Para agravar aún más la situación yo no veía bien de lejos; tenía miopía. Pero en ese tiempo creía, como mucha gente cuando recién empieza a manifestarse la miopía, que no necesitaba lentes; recién comenzaría a usarlos dos años después. En esas condiciones estábamos corriendo, mi amigo por un lado y yo por otro, riéndonos y gritando, cuando en eso, noto algo extraño en el piso, como si el piso se moviera. Recién entonces me percaté que estaba en una azotea y ese piso que yo veía que se movía era la pared de otro edificio que quedaba más allá. Inmediatamente me paré y me di cuenta que me encontraba a muy pocos metros del borde. Seguí avanzando lentamente y pude ver, cuatro pisos abajo, a los universitarios, algunos caminando, otros estudiando, otros conversando, todos sin sospechar siquiera de que estuvieron a punto de ser testigos de una tragedia.
Recuerdo que, simplemente me di media vuelta, no le dije nada a mi amigo, y bajamos tal como habíamos subido, corriendo y riéndonos. El título de este relato es La Universidad; otro título podría haber sido “Casi muero por miope”, pero no quería dar una pista del desenlace.
Poco tiempo después, estando de visita en el centro vacacional Huampaní, no tuve tanta suerte. Afortunadamente, esta vez no estaba en una azotea. También era de noche y también estaba corriendo con mi hermano menor por las veredas del centro, pero no me di cuenta que éstas terminaban en unos escalones, hacia abajo, y continuaban más allá. Traté de frenar, pero ya era demasiado tarde; caí y un brazo y una rodilla recibieron el golpe. Mis tíos, que estaban cerca, corrieron a auxiliarme, mientras mi hermano se moría de risa. Me levanté y seguí corriendo.

Fotografía tomada desde la azotea que se menciona en este relato. Fue tomada un domingo en la tarde (razón por la que no se ven muchos universitarios), 17 años después de los hechos narrados aquí. La casa donde viví es la de losetas marrones, ubicada exactamente frente a la salida (o entrada) de la universidad. Se puede ver también parte del muro que rodea a la universidad. Entre pared y pared del muro hay una reja metálica pero no se aprecia muy bien en la foto. Este muro tiene una curiosa historia: Cuando empezaron a levantarlo, los universitarios se opusieron violentamente a su construción, aduciendo que estaban coactando su libertad, que los estaban encerrando. Tanto así que cuando los albañiles terminaban una pared, esa noche los universitarios la tumbaban, la tiraban al suelo. Pasaron semanas y la situación seguía igual, pared construída, pared derrumbada. La policía tuvo que hacerse presente y resguardar el muro hasta que finalmente lo terminaron y a los universitarios no les quedó más remedio que aceptarlo.
Muchos años después la Municipalidad de Lima necesitaba urgentemente ampliar la avenida universitaria, para lo cual debían convertir esa avenida (de nombre Germán Amézaga) que pasa por mi antigua casa (y que se ve en la foto), en una moderna autopista de dos vías, y la única forma de hacerlo era tumbar la parte del muro que corre paralela a esa avenida. Nuevamente los universitarios se opusieron pero esta vez al revés; no permitieron que destruyeran su preciado muro y luego de muchas gestiones tuvieron éxito en su reclamo.
Cuando recién llegamos a esta casa todavía no habían construido el muro y en ocasiones los universitarios protestaban por diversos motivos, bloqueando la avenida con grandes piedras. La policía tenía que venir a poner orden y empezaba la batalla. Los policías lanzaban gases lacrimógenos (que nos hacían llorar a nosotros) y los universitarios les tiraban piedras, muchas de las cuales impactaban en las losetas marrones de nuestra casa. Pero, aparte de eso, era un lugar tranquilo y los fines de semana era silencioso.
Actualmente todo ha cambiado; casi todas las casas se han convertido en negocios cuyos clientes son los universitarios, que se cuentan por miles. Ahora hay restaurantes, locales para sacar copias, para realizar trabajos con computadora, para alquilar computadoras, academias de preparación pre-universitaria, locales de videojuegos, alquiler de cuartos para vivir. Antes no pasaba ni una sola línea de buses por la avenida. Ahora pasan más de diez.
